Collectives and DIY Culture

A trend towards change in the cultural dynamics of the city of Rio de Janeiro

Authors

Abstract

The following article aims to address the emergence of innovative institutional arrangements of collective organization in the city of Rio de Janeiro, based on independent practices and DIY (Do It Yourself) culture. To achieve this purpose, the long-term research presented in this text examines how cultural policies, aligned with the concept of creative economy, have given rise to new spaces of cultural dissemination in the city. To understand this phenomenon, the research focuses on case studies and specific quantitative surveys of new institutional arrangements, i.e. independent spaces of culture located in different regions of Rio de Janeiro. These surveys were complemented with interviews conducted with curators and managers of these spaces, providing a qualitative view of how social networks are used and enables the identification of new patterns of dissemination and monetization of the activities developed by these venues.
