Mothers are alike?

Representations of motherhood in feminist artistic productions

Authors

Abstract

In this article, we reflect on the representations of motherhood in contemporary art from a feminist perspective. We bring forth some contemporary artistic productions by mother artists to highlight the intersectional nature and plurality of subjectivities that characterize motherhood, always considering art as a vector capable of enriching and sharing the field of individual and collective experience. The intention is to present works by mother artists that bring together the interplay of autobiographical elements and fictional construction to propose counter-narratives and challenge the culturally normalized model of motherhood. By relating theories on art, motherhood, and feminism, we aim to stimulate critical reflections on the role played by mothers in today's society.
