The arts of the stage and performance

Authors

Abstract

The book Manuel des études théâtrales: les arts de la scène et du spectacle (2024), edited by Martial Poirson, emerges as a comprehensive guide, combining theoretical, historical, and practical foundations of theatre. The manual covers topics ranging from historiography, dramatic text, and performance to aesthetics, stagecraft, theatre policies, sociology, anthropology, digital technologies, and hybridization with other arts. Each of the ten chapters is complemented by at least one methodological guidance sheet, offering procedures for analysis, critical reflection, and interdisciplinary connections. The volume also includes an extensive glossary. Aimed at students, researchers, and theatre professionals, this work stands out for treating theatre as a hybrid and dynamic element, providing tools to rethink its boundaries, activities, and challenges, while simultaneously questioning sectarianism and dogmatism in the field. Keywords: Theatre studies; Theatre methodology; History and practice of theatre.
