Abstract

The article, based on doctoral research on the trajectory of Augusto Boal, presents an overview of the foundation of the musical group Caldo de Cana and of the production of Canción del exilio, whose cast included Marcia Fiani, Maria Alice Saboia, José Eugênio Leal, Eduardo Fernandes, Leopoldo Paulino, Raul Ellwanger, and José Rogério Licks. Exiled in Buenos Aires during the 1970s, these artists came together in 1974 to denounce the unlawful practices of Latin American military regimes. With the escalation of state authoritarianism and the growing vulnerability of political refugees, the group disbanded in May 1974. Drawing on personal testimonies and archival collections, this study seeks to highlight the trajectory—often erased from dominant historiographies—of artists who remained committed to social engagement despite adverse conditions of cultural production. Keywords: Caldo de cana; Augusto Boal; Brazilian modern theatre.
