Call for Papers: Rebento 23 – Dossier: Seven Decades Without Brecht – The Historical Experience of His Influence and Vitality

Issue no. 23 of Rebento Journal, entitled "Dossier 7 decades without Brecht: the historical experience of his influence and vitality," opens a call for contributions on ideas and practices inspired by Bertolt Brecht in the arts, research, education, and political struggle. This special dossier invites a collective conversation regarding the apparent contradiction between the 70th anniversary of the death of the German playwright, director, and poet and his enduring relevance in Brazil. Rebento also proposes an evaluation of the debates held during the 6th Brecht and Education Forum, which took place from August 12 to 15, 2026, at the Institute of Arts of São Paulo State University (Unesp) in São Paulo. The various editions of the Brecht and Education Forum—born from the dialogue among activists, educators, researchers, and artists—have demonstrated how Brecht’s work is essential for invigorating practices of individual consciousness-raising, collective mobilization, learning, knowledge production, the critical examination of social reality, the reinvention of modes of coexistence, resistance against oppression, the revealing of contradictions, and emancipation across different contexts of national life. By transcending the boundaries of theatrical practice and introducing the perspective of dialectical epic theater into diverse spheres, Brecht’s ideas—aimed at transforming consciousness and redistributing the right to a full life—continue to foster engagement among individuals as well as social, political, and artistic movements. From this standpoint, historically marginalized communities and artists find a means of expression in Brecht’s proposals, which help expose the intersectionality of oppressions based on class, gender, race, sexuality, and more. Mirroring the thematic tracks, roundtables, and workshops of the 6th Brecht and Education Forum, this edition will cover the following themes: “Brecht, popular struggle, and social movements”; “Brecht in Brazil”; “On stage and/or in the classroom – Brecht, theatrical work, and pedagogical forms”; “Brecht beyond the theater”; “Brecht, the circus, and popular forms”; “Constructing the narrative scene”; “Teaching Brecht at the university level”; “Brecht in times of war and resistance”; “Brechtian variants in the Theatre of the Oppressed”; “Brecht in public schools”; “Forms of contemporary political theater”; “Brecht and theater-making in (and against) prison”; “Cinema, politics, and education”; “Brecht and popular theater schools”; “Acting and the praxis of the epic-dialectical stage”; “Brecht and children”; and “Translating Brecht.” Contributions—in the form of articles, translations, book reviews, artist notebooks, process accounts, glossaries, podcasts, and visual essays—must be submitted via the *Revista Rebento* platform (<https://periodicos.ia.unesp.br/index.php/rebento/en/about/submissions>) by October 23, 2026, for publication in December 2026.
